Prep Time: 20 minutes
Rise Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 45 minutes
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup honey (for boiling water)
- Toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning
Method
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a bowl, combine warm water and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Sprinkle in the yeast and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar, salt, egg, and vegetable oil. Add the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Bagels:
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then use your thumb to poke a hole in the center, stretching to form a ring.
- Boil the Bagels:
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the honey.
- Boil each bagel for about 30 seconds per side, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Add Toppings and Bake:
- Sprinkle bagels with your choice of sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or seasoning while they are still wet from boiling.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve:
- Allow bagels to cool slightly, then enjoy with cream cheese or your favorite spread.
